Yamaha G2L Grand Piano

The Yamaha G2L is essentially a Yamaha G2 with a few minor design changes. This is a high quality piano, made in Yamaha’s best factory in Japan. If you find one that has been well maintained, it should be a good option for most pianists. If you have any technical info or corrections for this article, please email mgpianos@gmail.com.

The pros of buying a Yamaha G2L

  • Just like the G2, the Yamaha G2L has longer strings and a better quality of sound that a Yamaha G1.
  • Though the quality is equal, it is less expensive than a C2 (or its variations, like the C2L and C2X) because it is an older piano.
  • It is made to last a lifetime and is made from the highest quality materials.

What are the cons of buying a Yamaha G2?

  • It is an older model so take care to carefully check the condition. You should hire a qualified piano technician to visit the piano and remove the action for a thorough inspection before you buy.

When was it produced?

This Yamaha G2 was produced between 1947 to 1994. It started life as the standard G2, and then went through some minor design changes and was released again as the G2L, later it would be renamed the G2X.

Where was it made?

All of Yamaha’s best pianos come from Japan, this includes the G model grands, the C model grands and the best uprights, like the U-series. This factory is also where the CFX concert grand is manufactured, considered one of the very best pianos in the world, the CFX retails at around £140k.

Quotes

Don’t just take my word for it, here is some a quote that I found on pianoworld…

“Yamahas seem to have a very good resale value even the older ones. And, in my view, they are nice pianos… I’d have a qualified tech take a look at it before any money changes hands.”

and another…

“The G series of Yamaha pianos is a very fine series. At one time they were the top of the line for Yamaha.”

Who should buy them?

A Yamaha G2L in a great condition would make a great piano for a home, small piano room, or a studio that can’t fit something bigger. It will make most pianists perfectly happy and is great for those who want a lovely grand piano but don’t have the budget for a Yamaha G3.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

If you want the very best tone you should check if you can fit a longer piano such as the G3 / C3 or G5 / C5 instead, however, if purchased in a good condition and properly maintained, the Yamaha G2L will last a lifetime.

Dimensions

The Yamaha G2L has a width of 146cm and a length of 170cm

New and used prices.

A used Yamaha G2L will cost anywhere from £8000-£12,000 depending on the age and condition. A new equivalent model C2X has an RRP of around £25,000.

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

Don’t focus too much on the L part of the G2L, a standard G2 is virtually the same, so if you’re struggling to find the G2L a G2 would make you equally happy. An alternative model to the Yamaha G2 and its variations is the Yamaha G3, a longer piano that will give you an extra depth of tone.

Conclusion

The Yamaha G2L is not too small like the yamaha G1 can be, and it won’t take over a space as much as a Yamaha G3 may. It will be less expensive than a Yamaha C2, so if you can find one in a good condition it will be a great choice for most pianists. Have it properly inspected and then go for it!
