Yamaha P124 upright piano

The Yamaha P124 is an intermediate piano, made in Indonesia. It’s a good quality piano but see if you can stretch to a U1 or U3. If you have any technical info or corrections for this article, please email mgpianos@gmail.com.

The pros of buying a Yamaha P124

  • It is the biggest of the P series, it has a decent sized soundboard and lovely long strings.

What are the cons of buying a Yamaha P124?

  • It can be hard to find. A Yamaha U1 or U3 are far easier to source and are higher quality.
  • It should take you through most of your grades but you might find yourself itching to upgrade before long

When was it produced?

Production of the Yamaha P-series began in 2008 and they are still being made today.

Where was it made?

All of the P series pianos are manufactured in Yamaha’s Indonesia factory, here they are able to keep production prices low. They were originally made in the Kemble factory in the UK, but switched to Indonesia when the UK factory was closed.

What differences between similarly named models?

There is the PX124, which is very similar. Yamaha often make slight design changes to models and use an added letter to indicate this as here. There is also the P116 and P121, which are part of the same P series range, but are smaller.

Quotes

Don’t just take my word for it, here is what I found on a forum on Piano World -

‘‘Why Yamaha put the P121 (and PX 124) in the P series class is a mystery as they are both based on the U1 design… Confusing for the customer and the dealer. eg, same basic frame/plate and action, in ascending order – B3, T118, P121, PX124, U1, YUS1”

Who should buy them?

If you are absolutely set on the Yamaha P124, then it is the best of the P series, and reminiscent of the Yamaha U1.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

Maybe. The Yamaha P124 will be OK, but there may come a time when you long for the best sound, the best touch, and for that you are going to have to upgrade to something like the U3, UX, U30A or U30BL.

Dimensions

Height:  124cm
Width:    154cm
Depth:    62cm

New and used prices.

The Yamaha P124 will cost around £7000 new, and around £4500 used, if you can find one! Its worth considering looking at a Yamaha U3 which will cost only slightly more, but is a full sized piano and is a better quality. You could possibly get a great U1 for less!

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

An alternative model to the Yamaha P124 is the U3, which is a much better option for those who want a concert level piano that will never need to be upgraded. If size is an issue, you could also consider the U1, similar in size to the P124, but from Yamaha’s best factory in Japan.

Conclusion

If you can find one, the Yamaha P124 is a nice piano and it will serve most people perfectly fine, but it would be a missed opportunity if you don’t at least consider the other models mentioned above, as they are truly outstanding pianos that will impress you always.
