Yamaha U3S upright piano review and information

The Yamaha U3S is a rare find, its a U3 with a silent option installed. Occasionally they my also come with another letter after the S, such as the U3SN, this is to signify that there has been a slight design change to the U3S. If you have any technical info or corrections for this article, please email mgpianos@gmail.com.

The pros & cons of the Yamaha U3S

PROS

  • The Yamaha U3S has all the positives of the world renown U3, with a silent option built in for good measure.
  • The Yamaha U3S is made from high quality materials and will last a lifetime.
  • The Yamaha U3S has lovely long bass strings, which will help it generate a rich tone.
  • The Yamaha U3S is 131cm tall, and taller is better when it comes to pianos.

CONS

  • The Yamaha U3S is incredibly difficult to find, you may be waiting for a long time for that added silent system.
  • You may also pay a fair bit extra for the U3S, when a U3 is essentially the same beast!

When was it produced?

The Yamaha U3S is a fairly new model and is still being produced today.

Where was it made?

The Yamaha U3S comes from Yamaha’s best factory in Hamamatsu, Japan. Yamaha makes all of its professional-grade pianos at this factory, including its £140k concert grand, the CFX.

What differences between similarly named models?

It’s different from the U3 because of the silent system fitted. It also may come with a few design changes, but these will be slight and won’t effect the piano’s musicality.

Quotes

Don’t just take my word for it…

Here is a quote from Piano World

“I just searched all open forums for “Yamaha Silent” and got 183 hits. You might get more trying other combinations such as: Yamaha U3S.”

And another…

“The last letter is indeed a series designation. All U3’s have the same basic scale design. The changes from series to series usually were cosmetic changes.”

Who should buy them?

The Yamaha U3S is perfect for those who REALLY want a silent option fitted, as with all the U3 pianos it is a great option for everyone, from ambitious students working through their grades, to concert musicians in need of a great piano.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

Nope. A Yamaha U3S will last a lifetime, though you may find yourself tempted by a medium to large grand!

Dimensions

Height: 131cm
Width: 153cm
Depth: 64cm

New and used prices

A new Yamaha U3S costs around £10,000, you can get a used one for about 30% less than that. A used Yamaha U3 can be bought for around £4999, so it may not be worth the added silent system.

Alternative models to consider similar to this

Any of the piano’s in the U range are worth carefully considering, such as the Yamaha U5, the Yamaha UX3 and the Yamaha YUS pianos. If you have a very large space you could also look at a medium to large grand such as the Yamaha C3 or above!

Conclusion

If you come across a Yamaha U3S and really want that silent system added, you should snap it up, you won’t regret it and it will last a lifetime. However, if you can’t find one, you wouldn’t be disappointed with a standard U3 either, you can even have a silent system installed!
