Yamaha YU3SXG upright piano review and information

The Yamaha YU3SXG has a self-playing disklavier system fitted. It is a great, but elusive, high-quality piano. This piano also has the X frame at the back, making it sturdier than the standard U models. If you have any technical info or corrections for this article, please email mgpianos@gmail.com.

The pros of buying a Yamaha YU3SXG

  • The Yamaha YU3SXG follows in the tradition of the U-models, so you know you’re getting a piano you can rely on.
  • It has a ‘silent’ option, meaning that headphones can be used, making it perfect for ambitious students.
  • It has an inbuilt self-playing feature.
  • This piano is a full-sized upright at 131cm tall. Taller is better when it comes to pianos.
  • It is crafted from high-quality materials and is made to last a life time.

What are the cons of buying a YU3SXG?

  • The Yamaha YU3SXG is as elusive as it is exclusive.
  • It isn’t much different to the Yamaha U3, but you will pay a lot more for the extra features.

When was it produced?

The YU3SXG was manufactured in 1998

Where was it made?

All the U series Yamaha pianos come from Yamaha’s best factory in Hamamatsu, Japan. Yamaha makes all of its professional grade pianos at this factory, including its concert grand, the CFX, which sells for £140k.

What differences between similarly named models?

This is an upgrade to the Yamaha U3, which doesn’t have the silent or disklavier features.

Don’t just take my word for it, here is what Shelley Piano, a piano shop in Singapore says about the YU3SXG

“This is one of the variations of the U3 model series. Yamaha YU3 always sounds great. They tend to be priced high because they are young and in short supply. They are always great and the “YU” prefix suggests it is one of the “hand-finished” models.”

Who should buy them?

The silent option is perfect for those ambitious students, while the quality will suit even the best concert pianist, and the self-playing option is great to sit back and listen.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

No, this piano will last a lifetime.

New and used prices.

These pianos are not manufactured anymore, however this model is on average around 30% more than the U3, which is a model we highly recommend. Used YU3SXG are sold at around 6000, although you may find one for slightly less in a private sale.

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

An alternative models to the YU3SXG is the YU3, which is virtually the same, minus the silent and self-playing features, but is easier to find, and a less expensive option.

If you can find one of these pianos, you will not regret buying it.
