Yamaha YU5SXG upright piano review and information

The Yamaha YU5SXG is almost exactly the same as the YU3SXG, in fact I really struggled to find any difference at all. Both pianos have a self-playing disklavier system fitted, as well as having a ‘silent’ function. The only difference is the YU5SXG is a slightly upgraded model. The pros of buying a Yamaha YU5SXG

  • It follows in the tradition of the U-models. So you know you’re getting a piano you can rely on.
  • It has a ‘silent’ option, meaning that headphones can be used, making it perfect for ambitious students.
  • The Yamaha YU5SXG has an inbuilt self-playing feature, this disklavier system has been slightly updated compared to the one used on the YU3SXG.
  • It is a full-sized upright at 131cm tall. Taller is better when it comes to pianos.
  • It is crafted from high-quality materials and is made to last a life time.

What are the cons of buying a YU5SXG?

  • The Yamaha YU5SXG is as elusive as it is exclusive.
  • It isn’t much different to the Yamaha U3, but you will pay a lot more for the extra features.
  • Models equipped with silent and automatic performance functions in the 1990s may have a negative (or zero evaluation) in the purchase assessment due to concerns about malfunction or deterioration of electronic devices over time.

When was it produced?

The YU5SXG was manufactured in 1998

Where was it made?

All the U series Yamaha pianos come from Yamaha’s best factory in Hamamatsu, Japan. Yamaha makes all of its professional grade pianos at this factory, including its concert grand, the CFX, which sells for £140k.

What differences between similarly named models?

This is an upgrade to the Yamaha U3, which doesn’t have the silent or disklevier features, and the Yamaha U3S, which doesn’t have the disklevier system.

Don’t just take my word for it, here is what Kaitori Pianos says

“The YU5SXG is Yamaha’s YU5 upright piano, the highest peak in the YU series, equipped with a mute and automatic performance (silent ensemble) function.”

Who should buy them?

The silent option is perfect for those ambitious students, while the quality will suit even the best concert pianist, and the self-playing option is great to sit back and listen.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

No, this piano will last a lifetime.

New and used prices.

This model is extremely difficult to find, and as such is difficult to price. We would suggest looking at one of our wonderful U3’s instead.

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

An alternative models to the YU5SXG is the YU3, which is virtually the same, minus the silent and self-playing features, but is easier to find, and a less expensive option.

If you can find one of these pianos, you will not regret buying it.
