Yamaha YUS3 upright piano review and information

There are not many better uprights than a Yamaha YUS3. It has all the features that make Yamaha uprights so good, plus some improved bits. If you have any technical info or corrections for this article, please email mgpianos@gmail.com.

The pros of buying a YUS3

  • It follows in the tradition of the Yamaha U3, so you’re getting a terrific upright.
  • The YUS3 will last a lifetime, so no need to upgrade.
  • It will hold its value very well over time.

The cons of buying a SUS3

  • It is a newer model, so they can be harder to find.
  • It is more expensive than the standard U3 and other similar models.

When was it produced?

The Yamaha YUS3 is a fairly new model and is still being manufactured now.

Where was it made?

The Yamaha YUS3 was made in Hamamatsu, Japan. Yamaha produces all its top pianos here, from their best factory. This includes their top concert grand piano, the CFX, which goes for £140k.

What differences between similarly named models?

The YUS1 is 10cm smaller at 121cm. This means it doesn’t have the same depth in tone. The YUS5 is a similar model with a few small upgraded changes.

Quotes

Here are some quotes I found on a Piano World forum

“…best value out of all is probably U3 and the highest quality is YUS3. U3 is still a really nice piano”. – http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/3097996/re-used-yamaha-u3-sx-1997-u300-1995-yus3-2013-or.html

and another one

“I’ve played new Yamaha YUS3, YUS5, U3 at two different dealers. They were fine instruments” – http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/1871153/new-kawai-k8-vs-used-yamaha-ux3.html

Who should buy them?

The Yamaha YUS3 will see ambitious students through their grades and please the best professional pianists too. If you have the budget, this is a piano that will make you smile.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

No – the YUS3 is good enough for professionals and will last a lifetime.

Dimensions

Height:  131cm
Width:    153cm
Depth:    64cme

New and used prices.

The price for a new YUS3 is around £11,000. If you find one secondhand you will probably pay around £7500-£8000

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

I always recommend similar uprights from the Yamaha U-series, such as the U3, U300, U30A, U30BL or U3X. These wonderful pianos also come from Hamamatsu, so you know you are getting a good piano.

Conclusion

The Yamaha YUS3 is up there with the very best pianos ever made. You won’t be disappointed if you buy one, but you might be disappointed if you try to find one secondhand.
