Kawai KG-1 Baby Grand Piano
The KG-1 is the baby grand of Kawai’s KG series, measuring around 5 feet 1 to 5 feet 4. It is the smallest of the range, and a lovely size for a normal living room where a larger grand simply would not fit.
The KG series was by far the most common Japanese Kawai grand, so the KG-1 turns up fairly often reconditioned. You get the look and the horizontal grand action in a compact footprint. The trade-off, as with any short grand, is that the bass is not as full as on a longer instrument, but for most homes that is a fair swap for the space it saves.
If you want a first grand that fits a real room, the KG-1 is a sensible place to start. Compare it with a Yamaha C1 baby grand if you can.
