How to Move a Yamaha Piano
Pianos are heavy, awkward and easily damaged, so moving one is a job to think carefully about. Here is an honest guide.
How heavy is it
A Yamaha upright typically weighs somewhere between 200 and 250kg, and a grand more. That is a serious weight, concentrated and top-heavy on an upright, which is why moving one is not a two-people-and-a-van job. See our U1 weight and U3 weight pages for exact figures.
Short moves within a room
Sliding an upright a short way on a hard floor can be done carefully with two or three people, keeping it upright and moving slowly. Never try to lift it, and mind your back and the floor.
Moving between rooms, floors or homes
This is a job for professional piano movers. They have the trolleys, straps and know-how to move a piano safely up stairs and through doors without injury or damage. It costs, but far less than a dropped piano or a hurt back. A general house-removal firm is not the same as a specialist piano mover.
After the move
