Which Yamaha Upright Piano Is Best?
There is no single best Yamaha upright, but there is a best one for you, and for most people the answer comes down to two models, the U1 and the U3. Here is how to choose.
The two that matter most
The U1 (121cm) and the U3 (131cm) are the Yamaha uprights the world relies on. Both are superb, hold their value, and are the backbone of teaching rooms, schools and homes. The U3 is taller, with a bigger, deeper tone; the U1 is a little more compact. See our U1 versus U3 guide.
If budget is tight
Below the U1 sit models like the b1 and b3, and the older U-series. These are decent pianos, but a reconditioned Japanese U1 usually gives you far more piano for similar money than a new budget model. See why a reconditioned Japanese Yamaha beats a new budget piano.
If you want the best
Above the U1 and U3 sit the tall YUS and SU series, and the older UX models with their solid backs, which are prized for tone. These are the top of the Yamaha upright range.
