Yamaha UX500 upright piano review and information

The UX500 is among Yamaha’s very top models. Very similar to the amazing UX300, with a few improved parts on the inside and a sostenuto pedal added.

Pros and cons of the Yamaha UX500?

PROS

  • The Yamaha UX500 is part of Yamaha’s X series, which means it has an X frame on the back. Yamaha claims that this makes the piano stronger and improves its stability.
  • The UX500 is made from the highest quality materials and has a sostenuto pedal.
  • At 131cm tall the Yamaha UX500 has lovely long strings that help it generate a rich sound.
  • The UX5 has an x-brace for support at the back, so the structure is that little more stable
  • The Yamaha UX500 is vented at the front, allowing more sound to escape.
  • The Yamaha UX500 will last a lifetime; so, although it is higher priced, there will be no need to ever upgrade.

CONS

  • The Yamaha UX500 is very rare. If you like it but can’t find one, try the UX or U30BL instead which are also fantastic pianos and much easier to source.

When was it produced?

The Yamaha UX500 was only made between 1994 ad 1997, giving it a very short production window.

Where was it made?

The Yamaha UX500 was produced in Yamaha’s best factory in Hamamatsu, Japan. Yamaha makes all of their greatest pianos here, including the CFX concert grand piano, which sells for around £140k.

Who should buy them?

The Yamaha UX500 would suit students who are ambitious and want to pass all their grades on a piano that will last a lifetime and professional players who require the very best instrument. No-one would ever regret buying a UX500.

Will I need to upgrade at some point?

No. You’ll be able to keep this piano in the family for generations.

Dimensions

Height: 131cm
Width: 160cm
Depth: 64cm

New and used prices.

The UX5 is not made new anymore and you should expect to pay around £6000 for a professionally reconditioned 2nd hand one.

Alternative models to consider similar to this.

The Yamaha UX300 is a good alternative to the UX500 as you’ll pay a lot for that sostenuto pedal, sadly though, they are just as rare. If you need something cheaper and easier to find, but with the same high quality you should consider the Yamaha U3.

Conclusion

The UX500 is a rare gem of a piano, if you find one that has been cared for and properly reconditioned, you should definitely snap it up.
