Bechstein and Steinway are two of the great piano names, founded in the same year, and a natural pair to compare.
The makers
Both began in 1853, Bechstein in Berlin and Steinway in New York. Both are hand-built, top-end makers with long concert histories. In the great days of the piano they were rivals across Europe.
Tone
Bechstein is known for a refined, clear, singing tone, often described as more transparent and better at colour and detail than at sheer volume. Steinway has the bigger, bolder projection that fills a concert hall. Neither is better; they suit different ears and different music.
Price and availability
Both are expensive new. On the used market Steinway is more common in the UK and has the stronger resale, while a good older German Bechstein can offer a lot of piano for the money if you find the right one. Just be sure you are comparing a hand-built C. Bechstein, not a cheaper Bechstein-branded line.
