Bösendorfer Upright Pianos

Bösendorfer is famous for its grands, but it also makes a small number of finely built upright pianos, and they are rare and lovely things.

The models

The uprights are named by height in centimetres, the 120 and the taller 130. The 130 in particular is a big, full upright with much of the warm Viennese tone of the grands. Because Bösendorfer makes so few, they do not come up often, new or used.

Who they suit

Someone who wants the Bösendorfer name and sound but has no room for a grand, or who simply prefers an upright. A good tall Bösendorfer upright is a serious instrument.

Price and the honest alternative

Bösendorfer uprights are expensive and scarce. See our price guide. If it is a fine upright you are after rather than the badge, a reconditioned Yamaha U3, a tall Japanese upright, is superb and costs a small fraction of a Bösendorfer. Well worth hearing first.
