Restoring a Bösendorfer Piano

Older Bösendorfers are sometimes restored before sale, and because they are rare and valuable, the quality of that work really matters. We are Yamaha specialists, not a Bösendorfer restorer, so this is general guidance.

What restoration involves

The main jobs are restringing, work on the action and hammers, attention to the soundboard and pinblock, and refinishing the case. Ask whether the piano had a light going-over or a full rebuild, and let the price reflect which.

The parts question

As with any fine piano, ask exactly what was replaced and with what. A Bösendorfer restored with quality parts by someone who knows the make is worth far more than one patched up cheaply. Given how few Bösendorfers exist, a proper restoration by a specialist is worth seeking out. Get the work in writing.

Restore or buy already done

If you own a Bösendorfer you love, a proper restoration can be well worth it. If you are buying, it is usually safer to buy one already restored by a known workshop, so you can hear the result. Our buying guide covers what to check.
