Steinway vs Bechstein

C. Bechstein is one of Germany’s great piano names, and a natural rival to Steinway in Europe.

The makers

Bechstein has built pianos in Germany since 1853, the same era as Steinway. Both are hand-built, top-end makers with long concert histories. In the great days of the piano, Bechstein was as famous as any name in Europe.

Tone

Bechstein is known for a refined, clear, singing tone, often described as more transparent and less powerful than a Steinway, and better at colour and detail than at sheer volume. Steinway has the bigger, bolder projection. Neither is better; they suit different ears and different music.

Which to buy

As with all these makers, play both and trust your own preference. Both hold their value well. If the budget will not stretch to either, a reconditioned Yamaha grand is a fraction of the price and a great deal of piano.
