Used Steinway Piano Prices
“How much is a used Steinway?” has no single answer, because condition matters more than anything else. A used Steinway can cost less than a new upright, or more than a new car. This sets out the ranges honestly, so you can judge whether a price you have been quoted is fair.
We are Yamaha specialists, not a Steinway dealer, so we have no Steinway to sell you and no reason to talk the market up or down.
What drives a used Steinway’s price
Four things, roughly in order. Whether it has been rebuilt, and with what parts. The condition of the soundboard, action and pinblock. The model and size. And whether it is a New York or Hamburg piano. Age matters far less than people expect. Our buying guide has the full checklist.
Rough price bands
As a broad guide for a used Steinway grand in the UK:

The larger models, the B and the D, sit at the top of each band, the smaller S, M and O lower down. A modern used Model B in good order is one of the most sought-after pianos on the market, and priced to match.
Why the cheap ones are not always a bargain
A Steinway priced well below these bands usually has a reason: a replaced non-Steinway soundboard, a tired action, or a rebuild done with substitute parts. None of that shows in a photograph. Always have any used Steinway checked over by an independent technician before you buy.
The honest alternative
If these numbers are more than you want to spend on a piano for the home, a well-reconditioned Yamaha C-series grand from Japan costs a fraction of a restored Steinway and gives you a great deal of the same pleasure.
