Steinway Model K Upright Piano

The Model K is the biggest and best Steinway upright. Hamburg makes it as the K-132, and New York makes it as the K-52. The names mean the same thing: 132cm, or 52 inches, tall. That extra height gives it longer strings and a bigger soundboard, so the bass is deep and rich. Many people say it sounds more like a small grand than an upright.

How to tell if you have a Model K

Look inside the lid for the model on the cast iron frame. If you cannot see it, measure from the floor to the top of the lid. At about 132cm, or 4ft 4in, a Steinway upright is very likely a Model K.

Your serial number will tell you the year it was made.

Hamburg K-132 or New York K-52?

Most Model Ks in the UK are Hamburg K-132s. Both are excellent, and both are in demand.

Who it suits

The Model K suits serious players who do not have room for a grand. It is a favourite with teachers, as it has the touch and tone to take a student a long way. It does need a reasonable room, as it is a powerful piano.

What a Model K is worth

As the top Steinway upright, the Model K sits at the upper end of used upright prices. An older piano needing work may sell for a few thousand pounds, while a restored or recent one can be well over £15,000. Condition and age make the biggest difference.

What to check

  • Hammers and dampers. Look for wear and listen for notes that ring on.
  • Keys. Uneven or sticking keys usually need regulating.
  • Tuning. Ask whether it holds its tune between visits.
  • Cabinet. Polished finishes can be refinished, but water damage is harder to fix.
