Is a baby grand right for you?
A baby grand gives you the look and much of the feel of a full grand in a smaller footprint. You get a horizontal action, which many players prefer, without needing a room the size of a small hall. The trade-off is length. A shorter piano has shorter bass strings, so the low notes are not as full as on a larger grand. For most homes that is a fair swap for the space it saves. Our current baby grand stock is shown below.

The main Yamaha baby grands
The usual entry point is the Yamaha GB1, and the newer GB1K, among the most compact grands Yamaha makes. The GC1 sits a step up in build, and the older GA1 and A1 sit alongside them as affordable grands. These are a separate, entry-level line from the C and G series. If you want to step up, the smaller C series grand, the C1, is the next choice, and we cover it on the grands page.

Baby grand questions, answered
How big is a baby grand?
Baby grands are the shortest grands, usually around 150cm to 165cm long. That is short enough to fit many living rooms while still giving you the horizontal action and the look of a grand. The exact size depends on the model, so check the measurements before you buy and we can help you work out what fits.
Is a baby grand better than a good upright?
Not always. A baby grand gives you the grand action and the appearance, which many players love. But a tall, good-quality upright like a Yamaha U3 can have fuller bass than a very short grand, because the strings are longer. So it is a real choice, not a straight upgrade. If tone matters most and space is tight, do not rule out an upright.
What is the difference between a GB1, a GC1 and a C1?
They sit at different points in the range. The GB1 is the compact, more affordable entry grand. The GC1 is a step up in build. The C1 is part of Yamaha’s main C series and is a more serious instrument again. All three are worth considering, depending on your budget and how much piano you want.
Can you deliver a baby grand?
Yes. Free delivery to a ground floor anywhere in the UK, with your first tuning at home included. Stairs or tight access are quoted separately, since a grand needs careful handling. Let us know about the route in and we will plan it with you.
