Bechstein A-Series Grands

Bechstein’s A-series covers its smaller grands, one of the ranges you will see most often, new and used. Here is what to know.

What the A-series is

In Bechstein’s modern naming, the A-series are the more compact grands, with the number giving the length in centimetres. So an A190 is around 1.9 metres, near 6 feet 3, a proper home grand rather than a baby grand. Older Bechstein grands used different model letters, so always check the actual length rather than relying on the name alone. See our models guide.

Who they suit

The A-series suits a player who wants a genuine hand-built German grand that fits a normal, if generous, room. You get the refined Bechstein tone in a size you can live with.

C. Bechstein or the cheaper lines

As with all Bechsteins, check whether it is a hand-built German C. Bechstein or one of the cheaper W. Hoffmann or Academy grands built partly abroad. The difference in price and quality is real.

Price and alternative

See our price guide for the ranges. A reconditioned Yamaha C3, at 6 feet 1, is the natural cheaper comparison at this size, and we are happy to let you hear both.
