Bechstein Upright Pianos
Bechstein is famous for its grands, but it also makes excellent upright pianos, and a used Bechstein upright can be a wonderful piano for a home.
The modern range
The hand-built German uprights are led by the tall Concert 8, at around 131cm, a full-size professional upright with a big, grand-like tone, among the best uprights made anywhere. Below it sit shorter models for smaller rooms. As with the grands, there are also cheaper W. Hoffmann and Academy uprights built partly abroad, so check which you are looking at.
Older Bechstein uprights
Older German Bechstein uprights turn up regularly on the used market and many are still fine pianos. The pre-war ones can be lovely, though as always condition matters more than age, and a tired old upright can cost more to put right than it is worth. Our buying guide explains what to check.
