The History of Petrof
Petrof is one of the oldest and most respected piano makers in Europe, and one of the very few still owned by its founding family.
From 1864
Antonín Petrof built his first grand piano in Hradec Králové, in what is now the Czech Republic, in 1864, having learned his craft in Vienna. The firm grew quickly, winning medals at international exhibitions and becoming one of the largest piano makers on the continent, supplying the concert halls of central Europe.
Through a difficult century
Like many central European firms, Petrof was nationalised under communism after the Second World War. When the country returned to private ownership in 1991, the Petrof family took the firm back, and it remains family-owned today, now led by the fifth generation, still making pianos in the same city.
