Steinway Model A Overview

The Model A sits between the small home grands and the larger Model B, at 6 feet 2 inches. It gives a noticeably fuller, longer sound than the popular M and O, without needing the room a B demands. That makes it a favourite for players who want more piano but have a normal-sized music room.

Who it suits

Pianists who find the smaller grands a little short in the bass, but who cannot house a Model B. The A is a genuine step up in tone for a manageable size.

The room it needs

Around 6 feet 2 inches long, so a decent-sized room, but not the near concert-hall footprint of the bigger models.

What it costs

New, roughly £95,000 and up (see our new price guide). Used, the Model A is less common than the M and O, so it can take a little longer to find, but it is well worth hearing. Our used price guide sets out the ranges.

The alternative

A reconditioned Yamaha C3, at 6 feet 1, is a natural comparison at a fraction of the price. Come and hear both.
