Steinway Model B Overview

The Model B is, for many players and technicians, the finest all-round Steinway. At 6 feet 11 inches it is big enough for a full, serious sound, yet it still fits a large domestic room, a studio or a small hall. It is often called “the perfect piano”, and it is the most sought-after Steinway on the used market.

Who it suits

The Model B is the choice for a serious pianist who wants a Steinway at home and has the room for it. It has much of the power and depth of the concert Model D in a piano you can actually live with, which is why it is a favourite in recording studios and teaching rooms too.

The room it needs

At close to seven feet you want a generous room, ideally five metres or more in one direction, with a little space around the piano to let the sound open up.

What it costs

New, a Model B in the UK is around £110,000 and up. Steinway does not publish prices, so see our new price guide. It is on the used market that the Model B really shines, because demand is high and the pianos last for generations. A good used or restored Model B is one of the most dependable buys in the piano world, though rarely a cheap one. Our used price guide has the bands.

The sensible alternative

If a used Model B is beyond the budget, a reconditioned Yamaha C-series grand, such as a C5 or C6, gives you a large, fine grand for far less. Come and compare the two with your own ears.
