Steinway Model D Concert Grand
The Model D is Steinway’s full concert grand. At 274cm, or just under 9ft, it is the piano you see on stage in most of the world’s concert halls. Steinway has made it in both New York and Hamburg since the 1880s.
How to tell if you have a Model D
Look for the letter D on the cast iron frame or soundboard. A Model D is about 8ft 11¾in from the front of the keyboard to the tail. Nothing else in the Steinway range comes close in length.
Your serial number will tell you the year it was made.
Where Model Ds come from
Most used Model Ds in the UK have lived in a concert hall, music college, church or recording studio. Some were later sold to private owners. A concert hall piano may have been played very hard, but it will also usually have been well looked after by a skilled technician. The service history matters a lot.
Who it suits
The Model D is built for big spaces. It suits concert venues, colleges and studios. A few private owners have rooms big enough for one, but it needs a hall-sized room to sound its best.
What a Model D is worth
The Model D sits at the top of each price band. A full rebuild can cost a great deal, so condition makes a huge difference. As a rough guide, a used Steinway grand in the UK sells for:
- £8,000 to £20,000 if it is older and original, needing work
- £20,000 to £40,000 if it is in good original condition or lightly restored
- £35,000 to £70,000 and up if it has been fully rebuilt with genuine Steinway parts
- £40,000 to £90,000 and up if it is less than 20 years old and excellent

What to check
- Action and hammers. Concert use wears these fast. Ask when they were last replaced.
- Soundboard. Look for cracks and check the crown has not flattened.
- Pinblock. Ask how well it holds its tune.
- Service records. A hall or college should have them.
