Steinway Model S Overview

The Model S is Steinway’s baby grand, at 5 feet 1 inch, the smallest grand the firm makes. It was designed to bring a real Steinway into a room that cannot take a larger grand. It is a lovely thing, though the short strings mean you give up some of the bass depth of the bigger models.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants a true Steinway grand but has limited space. Be clear-eyed that a baby grand is chosen for its size, not its power. In the bass, a good tall upright can sometimes out-sing a small grand.

The room it needs

The smallest grand footprint Steinway offers, so it suits a normal room where a larger grand simply will not go.

What it costs

New, around £68,000 and up. Used, the S is sought-after precisely because it is small and fits where others cannot. See our used price guide.

The alternative

If space is the real driver, also hear a good reconditioned Yamaha before deciding, both a small grand like a C1 and a tall upright like a U3. In a small room a fine upright can be the wiser buy.
