Steinway Model D Used Price
A used Steinway Model D covers an enormous range, because condition and rebuild history matter far more than age. As a rough guide, an older Model D that is original and needs work can start from around the price of a new small grand, while a well-restored example with genuine Steinway parts, or a newer used one in excellent order, runs well into five and even six figures.
What sets the price:
- Whether it has been rebuilt, and with genuine Steinway parts or cheaper substitutes.
- The condition of the soundboard, pinblock and action.
- Its age, and whether it is a New York or Hamburg piano.
A cheap Model D usually has a reason, so always have one checked by an independent technician before you buy. Our buying guide lists what to look for, and the used Steinway price guide sets out the bands across the range.
Remember that a nine-foot concert grand needs a very large room. For most homes a smaller Steinway, or a reconditioned Yamaha C-series, is the wiser buy.
