I’ve moved over to Australia two years since and am trying to work out if it’s worth shipping my piano over or if I should sadly just sell it. It’s a Yamaha G5. It was a prototype for the disklavier and I have all the original kit, although I haven’t used it in years! The instrument is in great shape and has been taken care of over the years with regularly tunings and maintenance. (John Tordoff looked after it for me). It’s in good shape and it’s one of the nicest pianos I’ve played outside of proper concert venues, which is why I’m reticent to sell. On the other hand, it’s currently just sat not being used and who knows what will happen to it shipping it across the world!
We now have this piano here in our piano shop and we are taking it through our normal workshop reconditioning process to get it back to its prime condition both musically and cosmetically.
The Disklavier (self-playing system) is tested and working and currently has a very long controller unit that you can see in the photos. The dream scenario is to replace that with a tiny little USB gadget that my friend, Andy, makes here in the UK. I’ve bought one from him before for an upright disklavier to bypass the old original integrated floppy disk system and instead run the piano from an Android tablet including all the usual functions (playback, record, etc)
The piano is a wonderful instrument and we don’t yet know whether we will keep the disklavier or strip that off. That may largely depend on how well the bluetooth version can be integrated as we really do want to get rid of that huge old original box that sits next to the piano.
