Petrof Pianos
Petrof is the great Czech piano maker, and one of the largest and oldest piano firms in Europe. If you want a hand-built European grand with a warm, romantic tone, but not the price of a German flagship, Petrof is a name well worth knowing.
A Czech family firm
Petrof has made pianos in Hradec Králové, in the Czech Republic, since 1864, when Antonín Petrof built his first grand. It is still owned and run by the Petrof family, now the fifth generation, and still built in the same city. It is one of the largest piano makers in Europe, making around a hundred grands and five hundred uprights a year.
The tone and the value
Petrof is known for a warm, singing, romantic tone, closer to the older European tradition than to the brighter Japanese sound. Its great appeal is value: a Petrof gives you a genuine hand-built European piano for less than the big German names. Players from Sviatoslav Richter to Paul McCartney have used them.
The models
The grands run from the smaller Standard series, the Bora, Breeze and Storm, up to the larger Master series, the Pasat, Monsoon and the concert Mistral. The uprights run from around 118cm up to the tall P 131 and P 135. See our grand and upright pages.
